I've been reading alot of the posts here, and it sounds like anything to substantially raise horsepower or torque takes a lot of work and/or customization. The main things I've read about are porting the intake and exhaust manifolds and installing a CAI and a bigger exhaust. Any other ideas on makin' some ponies?

Sure...and lose about 250-300 lbs. too which add to performance. :D

I think my cat might have to come out for a little bit.

Having driven mine with no exhaust for a couple days, it's not worth it. You feel a touch stronger right around 3000ish RPM, but that's it.
Also, mine rotted out, I didn't take it off as an experiment-I took it off so the rest of it wouldn't fall off driving down the road.

I had no muffler for a couple days after I replaced my intermediate pipe. You DO get a top-end improvement. It's not a whole lot, but enough to make a difference in the butt dyno.
BTW, what's the HP/TQ rating on a 3500? Or with a 3500 top end on a 2.8?

No ill still have everything else on from my exhaust, im just saying remove the cat and put in a pipe in its place. A little more grrrrrr. lol

Removing the cat isn't going to do anything. If your cat's restrictive, it's time to get a new one, because the only way it'll cause restriction is if it's clogged.

I'm in no way in favor of trashing the enviroment or doing anything illegal in the name of 2-4 HP. *BUT*, *IF* you are going to gut a cat. Run down to your local parts store and snag a thrush muffler (glass packs or cherry bomb) that is about the same size as your cat.
Replace your cat with the thrush. That way, atleast you've added a resonator and it will mellow the sound of your exhaust and hopefully give it a deeper almost growl.
Other than that, if your cat is good leave it in place. It's not worth the few HP you may gain.

Now thats a post I can completely agree with... a lot of these engines will do better with a bit of back pressure... when you open up the exhaust too much you can actually drop torque... what good is HP in a DD if you don't have the torque to get you moving..?
This was one of the great things about the 3800 series II... Plenty of low end torque and nice High end HP...
For my 3800 series II, I have the stock piping, a High Flow cat and I am still on the stock muffy... I will not be able to outflow what I have... My next change will be me going to a Magnaflow Muffy just for the tone, I will keep the factory resonator...
So the question becomes, how much flow is too much flow?
On my Buddies 3500 V6, we noticed the Pipe was small and looked like the pipe for a quad 4.... He had a custom cat back done with a FM 80 Series, I think we went from 2" to 2.25... We did notice a drop in low end torque, but picked up a bit on the top... Resonator was also removed...
What size pipe does the 60* V6 have from the factory?

Mine is stock at 2". I just ordered a Hooker Aerochamber muffler for it.

If you replace your cat with a glass pack, you leave the rest of your exhaust alone. So basically you have 2 mufflers.

My 2.8 has a 2.25in exhaust (stock).

Makes me wonder if they used on Pipe size for all of the engines as at the time in 88, you could have your choice of engines right to the 3.8 and in some cases the 3800.. The 3800 would have had 2.25 at the least..
Over the years we have seen the 3800's with pipe as large as 2.50"
So this leads me to wonder if all of the A Bodies through 93 had the 2.25" and had it shrink with the 3100 in 1994...
