Any advice on replacing the gasket on a flip up style sunroof on an 83 6000 STE? Manual says to apply weather strip adhesive on both the horizontal channel and the vertical wall. It does not appear this design has drain holes like the newer designs, it relies on a weather-tight seal all around.

I got a new GM seal for the sunroof in my '87 VR years ago. It didn't seem fit right and continued to leak. And no, it does not have any side drains. I think it was about 80 bucks 7 or 8 years ago.
I think I learned my lesson, no more cars with a hole in the roof!

I replaced the gasket in my 86 coupe back in 1999, my sunroof still has NO leaks! I did run a small bead of sealent around the outside edge of the gasket (in the channel...NOT visible on the outside of the car)
The secret to getting a leak free sunroof lies within the handle that you flip up. If you shimm it downwards a small amount, it holds the glass tighter and it does not leak. Also, you can remove the prongs from the front of the glass and bend them slightly to hold the front of the glass tighter as well.

Do you remember which brand/ part number adhesive you used? 3M has a couple of types one for EPDM rubber, and Permatex has two No. 80 and 82. Or do you know the type of rubber the sunroof weatherstrip is made?

What was wrong with the new gasket that it would not fit right? Was the cross-section shape different or the overall size? If you had to do it again would you just try to reseal the old weatherstrip seal?

Sorry, I don't remember the exact stuff I used, it was whatever was laying around the shop at the time. We did use 3M pretty much exclusively though. I only used a little though, the seal held itself in fairly well IIRC.
