Anyone replace this seal on top of the fuel tank? Where can you get the special wrench to loosen the lock ring? I have a carbed 2.8 with the tank sending unit, but I don't think it is that much different than the fuel injection pump.

I think the tank might be the same, but the sending unit is completely diferent I do beleive. I am pretty sure that your carbed motor has a mechanical fuel pump located on the engine somewhere. Where as the fuel injected models would have the fuel pump being electrical in the tank.

Anyways,,, The lock ring on top of the tank, you just take a flat head screw driver and gently tap each of the 3 corners until it pops loose. Befor you start, make sure you wash the hell out of the top of the tank. You want no dirt, dust, debris, or anything on top of that tank. If you let any of that stuff fall in the tank, you run a pretty good chance of clogging the strainer when you get it all back together.

Why does it need replaced? Leaks? The tanks usually rust out long before that seal goes bad.

Yep, slow leak on an incline with 1/2 tank and over. I can see the gas stains from the top of the tank down the back. But, some surface rust is starting on the outside of the tank. I might replace the tank. Know a good source? I've seen a Spectra (and various other brands) and a Dorman (higher priced)

I recall someone posting on the old abody.net that compressing the oring was a real pain during replacement of the new orign without the wrench, because you need to push down and turn at the same time. Or does the oring just slide one and you screw it down? Yep, I do have a mechanical fuel pump

BE CAREFUL USING A SCREW DRIVER!!

I have always been taught to use BRASS it doesnt make a spark which COULD be bad right on top of the fuel tank. I use a hammer and ANYTHING that is brass to do as Brian (6Kste) said.

Good point on the brass when used as a punch. I just found my spanner wrench which might work.

Where to the tanks usually rust out when they are bad? At the seam and top sending unit? As I say, the sending seal looks to be bad, but I can't say for sure. Do most of you just replace the tank?

On the a-body cars that I have had fuel leaks on, it was the fuel filller tube that leaked. I think there is a member of another board that had a leak on the welded seam.

My tank leaked are the seam under the port for the filler neck. I got a Spectra tank from RockAuto for about $75+ IIRC

I'll have to look at the tank closer. I know I have rust at the half seam and I am getting a leak from the top near the sending unit.

How was the job to replace the tank. It looks pretty straight forward if you have floor jack. Did you replace the rubber filler tube, all rubber hoses, and straps?

When replacing fuel pump, noticed that my gas tanks (http://www.carparts.com/Replacement-Gas-Tanks/600022134.car) was completely rusted inside. It sat for about a year and a half before I got it, so...
Just wondering if anyone could help me source a good replacement for my 4WD Wagon... I've tried all salvos around here with no luck.
