Anyone ever replace the temp sensor for the 3100 (guage sensor)? How was it? What am I up against?

Thanks!

If I remember correctly its not that hard. Maybe a 30 min job. if you are ever confused you can just buy the part and examine it. find the matching part on the car and study how it retaines itself inside the car. i believe they switched to the sensor being into the side of the radiator in 97 so before then I believe it may be in the resevoir or ontop of the block like the 3300.

On the MFI engines, the CTS is in the back of the thermostat housing. Don't know about the SFIs, haven't looked at one that closely.

I'm not sure which one is which, but there's one in the back head with a green and black wire running to it and another in the lower intake manifold by the thermostat. I'm guessing the one you're looking for is the latter judging by what Daniel said.

Yeah, there are two, including the one on the rear head. One sends temperature data to the ECM, the other sends it to the gauge. Why there had to be two sensors, I don't know. I imagine they could have engineered it for one sensor, and the ECM will send the temp data to the cluster, but NOOOOOOOO.

The sensor for the gauge is in the rear head, on the driver's side.

I myself prefer to have two dedicated sensors, rather than combing everything and having and ecm/pcm/bcm control the gauge.

"Rear head" Nice. Well I need to replace it, the temp guage is just about useless on the '96 Century (not much deflection).

Thanks for all the comments.

On the older ones, it's not so bad. I can't remember if the ABS or other crap gets in the way on the newer models. The sensor is poking out of the corner of the head, at an angle. Being at an angle makes it easier to get at.
