View Full Version : How do i hook up a Tachometer on my 1990 Cavalier ?

Does anyone know how i can hook up a Tachometer on my 1990 Cavalier ? It did not come with a tach from the factory so i would like to install an Autometer Tach. i have found where every wire on the tach goes except the wire from the tach that normally goes the negative side of the ignition coil on traditional cars, but mine does not have a coil with a negative output...does anyone know where i can tap into in order to get the engine pulse ???

I like AutoMeter, but personally, I would find a junkyard with a Speedo Cluster with Tach. Drop it in the dash, and your done. Tach wire is already ran as far as I know. It was on my 92, 93, and 94.

really? what color was this wire? and where was it it? i would rather put in my autometer tach because it seems a lot easier than replacing the entire cluster.

No idea, it was built into the current wiring harness.

so your all cars already had a factory tach in the dash?

No they didnt. But the wiring was already in the wiring harness, so all I had to do was change the Speedo Cluster, and I had one.

so wait do you mean the wire was loose and separte from the other wires but just next to the rest of wires? or was the wire incorporated into the plastic end connector plug that plugs into the back of the new dash cluster that you put in? which means you knew the wire was there but didnt know which one and which color it was exactly? thanks much

Wire was in the cluster of wires in the plastic end. I have no idea which one.

oh ok. how many plastic plug ins were there in the back of your new cluster? maybe i can look at a wiring diagram to show much which wire it maybe.
