91 Ciera 3300 Fuel Pump ????????

Hello All, I went to an enduro race this weekend with my 91 Ciera. It was running ok at an idle and if you kept the gas pedal in one place. All I could do was cruise at about 35mph during the race. If I tried to give it gas It would just die. I would shift it up into neutral and start it up and keep going. It finally died. I pulled into the pits and tried the key and there was no noise from the fuel pump. I am assuming the fuel pump is out. I have a fuel pump that came out of a 1989 custom cruiser. Will it fit in my car? The motor that is in the car is from the cruiser. The computer is still the original 91 ciera computer. According to Autozone the part number for the 91 ciera is E3240 and the model number for the Cruiser is E3222. I hope that they are compatible, I don't have $75.00 for a new pump. Thanks Kyle Shaw

Ok, So I just replaced the pump and tank from my 1991 Ciera with a pump and tank from a 1989 Cruiser. The car still doesn't seem to get much fuel pressure. Sometimes it will start with the first turn of the key and other times it won't even try to start. I can't figure this one out. On the times it won't try to start it does turn over, but the fuel pump can't be heard. The pump that is in the car from the Cruiser did not have any problems prior to changing, but it is doing the same thing in this car as the old pump did. Does anyone have any Ideas on what to do? I appreciate any help.

PS when it does start and run, It wants to die if you give it any gas at all. And when I put it in gear to drive it it tries to die. It can sit there and idle just fine. When it was on the race track last weekend I couldn't go any faster than 35mph. If I tried to go any faster it would just die. ??????????????????????

Between the wiper motor and the drivers side strut tower there is a jumper wire sticking out of the harness. That is the direct feed for the fuel pump. Run a jumper to that from the battery. No need for the key to be on.

Can you hear the pump run now? If you have a fuel pressure gauge,hook it up to confirm correct pressure.

Is it possible anything from the track could have come up and crushed the line?

I'd have to figure your fuel filter is good. ??

Just a heads up. The Oil pressure sending unit and the Fuel pump relay are wired in the same circuit, meaning if your Relay is bad/going bad, it wont turn on the pump when you turn the key on, but if you crank long enough to make oil pressure, suddenly the pump works......

I changed relay, pump comes on like it is supposed to, but when it is running it will chug every once in a while. If I try to floor it, it just about dies. It did throw the engine light on I checked the code and it said the Oxygen Sensor is bad. I will check the wires to the sensor and replace it with one from the other motor. Maybe this will take care of it. I will let you know as soon as I have a chance to do it. Thanks for all of the help guys. I appreciate it. Kyle

Kyle, one other thing to consider would be your fuel filter - you didn't mention whether or not you changed that when you changed the tank, so if it was plugged and was the cause of the problem then the two pumps would behave the same if they were both good. The computer may not understand why the oxygen sensor is reading lean when it thinks it's dumping all kinds of fuel into the engine, not knowing the fuel pressure is dropping like a stone.

The pump from the wagon should be louder as I believe it is designed to supply slightly more fuel. And as for the fuel line possibly being crushed, a '91 Ciera came with nylon fuel lines (started in '89), so the lines would not stay "crushed" if something hit them - they'd be more likely to kink and rupture than anything.

Screech, I have changed the filter and none of the lines are kinked or leaking. I still haven't had a chance to get it in the shop yet and work on it. Thanks

why do you think its a fuel related problem? Have acsess to a pressure tester, should instantly make 45 psi and hold for 20 minutes.

Ok, I changed the oxygen sensor yesterday and it will start fine and idle fine. When i give it gas while in park it sounds much better and doesn't try to cut out as before. But When I have it in gear and stomp on the pedal it dies. If I go easy and creep around doing 30 mph or so it is fine, but if I try to give it more gas it just dies for a second, then sometimes it will start back up on it's own and other times it will just die completely. I have a race planned on Jan 1 that I would like to run the car in and I just can't figure it out. Help Please. Thanks Kyle
