If there's a heat shield over the catalytic converter that is rattling?...can I just unbolt it? Will it have adverse effects on the system?

No advese affects on the system..
But there will be adverse effects on the car..

What I mean is that the system only needs the parts in the physical system itself to work.

But the car WOULD LIKE (not needs) to have that heat sheild. Without it, you run a risk of overheating your interior carpet, melting it, etc.

Is it needed? No. Should you go ahead and take it off? Thats your own call, but if you do, replace it as soon as it warms up. I think you should be ok for the winter months without the heat sheild thou.

ok. it's not an a-body. My friend ran over a median in the parking lot, and now his heat shield just rattles like no other. (98 Jetta)

Especially on a jetta. German cars run at a much higher temp than american cars. dont know why, I just know they do. Get that heat sheild replaced on it..

I was able to bend it a bit. It was rattling because it was smushed onto the catalytic converter. All is good

You should hear my heatshield by the muffler when my subs are going.

Hell, even teh spare tire shakes so much it rattles the tire well and makes a godawful noise >:(
