I looked in the knowlege base and could see electrical diagrams for the 87 and newer power seats.
What I need is info on the older 1984 seat. It has a single motor with a "power transmission" that engages the motor to the various actuators. The plastic housing of the transmission has deteriorated and crumbled.
My 1986 car has the same system because the seat base came from a 1983 model car. I know the newer cars have 3 individual motors instead of the power transmission.
Question is this... Can a 3-motor system be used in place of the old style single motor transmission? How much adaptation will be needed? I don't want to replace the entire seat.
I would like to install another single-motor transmission but I bet they are all getting pretty deteriorated and brittle. And I bet getting a new one is a pipe-dream...
Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance,
David

Why not just replace the whole track assembly? Isn't it just a 12V and ground hookup?

Ok, so the whole track asm will interchange. Yes it's just a 12V and gnd hookup. That answers my question.

I have no experience with your exact application, but in every other GM seat I've worked with, power mechanisms swap with manual and different variations between years of the same model will also swap.

Next week I have to go to North AL where there is a really great JY. Will try to score a newer seat base mechanism!
'Preciate the info!

Well I got a set of 3-motor tracks from a salvage yard in Columbia, MD last week. They came from an 89 Ciera. Got the tracks; wiring harness, motors and switches; all cables and hardware. The seat upholstery was NASTY and I got cut on the metal frame. Glad I have all my shots up to date!

This seat also had a power-tilt motor that would recline the seatback. I took this mechanism too. Will the power-tilt hinge and actuator fit the seat on my 84 car? It currentlyhas NO provision for any sort of seatback reclining action. Looks like a universal setup for GM seats.

Will take pictures as I investigate this. It was surprisingly hard to locate any power seat cars that were compatible. Most had seat tracks that "lock into" the floorboard at the front instead of bolt down. Then some had the seat controls on the doors; and I need the wiring harness and switch on the seat. I need to find a second set of 3-motor tracks because I know it is only a matter of time before the brittle plastic transmission breaks on my 86 T-Type.

I was in north AL near another "A-body heaven" junkyard but I am really busy at work and couldn't afford the time to stop there. Gotta put that on my mental parts-list!

If your current seat does not recline, I would guess that that part of it won't swap. If that can be adapted, that would be good news to me. I have two '86 Celebrity CL sedans, oddly, one has a power seat and does not recline, while the other reclines but is not power.

The recliner actually did adapt. I took pictures and will post them later. Just got home.

How do you replace the recliner motor? This stopped working on both my cars. I thought it was one of the motors under the seat, but I now realize there is a 4th motor for the recliner. How is this motor accessed? Thanks!!
