Took advantage of the pleasant weather and swept the back seats, front seats as well as under the rear seat and all the floor. Then I used Tuff Stuff to clean the upholstery a bit. It smells 1000% better and the seats and door panels are starting to look like a new car again. Now, I need to locate headliner material and get a few odds and ends that the previous owner messed up,and it will look nice in there once again. Here is a little before and after shot of the carpet alone. I ran out of time and didn't get to the heel pad or pedals yet.The pine needles were such a pain in the butt to remove and the little seeds of whatever were everywhere..

After... There was a huge pile of black ants (easily enough to fill a 1 cup measuring cup) in under the rear seat that I threw out when I was digging for the buildsheet. I fund a couple more stragglers, but I believe them to be all gone.

front...this was a mess...took about 45 minutes to get most of it out of there. Still need to locate the straight piece so I can get a few small yuckies between the seat and console..
Still...its alot nicer and cleaner smelling now..Now I need to add the special GS insignia front floor mats in it.

In the last picture, you can see all the fuzzy stuff that was blown out the air ducts from the heater. Apparently, the mice carried it in the lower ducts and when I turned the blower on,it plugged each and every duct with it. I started with a small screwdriver with the blower on to pick it out,but realized that the ducts could be removed real easily. I took out about 3 full double handfulls when all was said and done.A little spray of Tuff Stuff in the vents made it smell nice too..

Tuffstuff is one of my favorite things for cleaning an older car out. VERY NICE Job there.

Looks great! There's lots of satisfaction in cleaning up a car like that. GM uses some seriously tough materials in these interoirs. I used straight bleach on my seats and it cleaned them without damage.
Changing the headliner will get more of "old car funk" out of the air. I don't understand how some people stink up a car so bad. I would hate to think I lived like that. When I got my 86 T-Type, there were literally plants sprouting in the filthy carpet at the back seat floorboard!
Under the back seat there was enough petrified french fries and other food debris to sustain a person for a month. I retreived a ball of mould that had been most of a Big Mack burger from down around the shifter. It still had pickles on on it and BOY DID IT STINK when I disturbed it.
Y'all better be glad I didn't have a digital camera when I got that car! :-)

Good job dude! I love seeing the before/after pics. I completely removed my seats and used a Hoover Steam-Vac on them and all the carpeting. The results were similar.
Now if you really want to go nuts you should take the seats out and remove the carpet to clean the gunk underneath. Heck it's usually pretty profitable as you tend to find at least $5.00 in loose change and then wonder how in the hell it got there...

Pretty simple if you think of it...
1st, I picked up all the biggest pieces. Then I take the sweeper( I have a small Craftsman like a Shop-Vac to be able to reach inside all over) and really sweep it well. The next step I do is take a smaller bristle brush and run it over the carpet back and forth then left to right. You wont believe how much stuff that step brings to the surface. Then I sweep again. Since this car had all kinds of pine needles,I had to be careful that they didn't inbed themselves into the carpet. The pine needles are a pain as they go down into the carpet. I then re-do the brush act as well, and still you can't believe the amount of fuzzies that come out. Then again, sweep thoroughly as well as sweep the brush.
Next, I get the Tuff Stuff foam type (WalMart, Kmart etc carries it) then spray a section at a time and let it work about 30-45 seconds then go at it with the brush again. Make sure you don't saturate the carpet and seats.Use enough to foam it up. Then scrub the bad spots and work your way all over.I do the whole interior then again a final sweeping. Usually this makes it look like what I pictured. I have taken some really bad looking pissy looking stains off the passenger side seat and on the back seats. I had to do the seats twice to make them look good. I absolutely like the smell that the Tuff Stuff lets in the car when done. I was in the car last night again and it smelled like a new clean car.
Another trick if you car smells funky,is to spray a small rag saturated and stick it in the vents a couple days or even under the seat.Three other things you may have to do if your interior is dirty is to use a little cleaner with water and brush real well before cleaning with Tuff Stuff. I'd let it dry a bit before using theTuff Stuff though.2nd don't be afraid to use it on the plastic parts or dash pad etc to clean before using Armor All or whatever protectant you prefer. Last if you get a cheap lint remover roller, that takes alot of fine fuzzies off the seats. Since these seats has a smooth material on the sides and backs, its invaluable. I can clean an interior nicely for about 10 bucks if I need all the items. That and about 1-1 1/2 hours and thats what I got.
Thanks for the help on the cassette thing as well I am grateful!

I use the tuff stuff only for spots on carpet but its the first cleaning step on the dash and doors/other plastic parts. Most times when I am going to clean a carpet I am going to remove it COMPLETLY.
But I use it in the same exact way as BigNasty does, dash, seats, carpet, and door panels. Then I go over the plastic with Castrols Super Clean then Meguiars Shine.
