mystery wire, looks like ground...to where?
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t70/CamoDeafie/cars/DSCN2493.jpg
relay or something for the starter system?
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t70/CamoDeafie/cars/DSCN2494.jpg
let me guess, this plug is for one of the cooling fan plugs from the original fan?
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t70/CamoDeafie/cars/DSCN2495.jpg
also just noticed that my trans has wires going into it...so its a -C model eh...

wires
>how do you tell if fusible links are burnt out
Something does not work...
>let me guess, this plug is for one of the cooling fan
If that piping is part of AC, then it looks like blue/green wires are related to "head pressure" sensor, which activates cooling fan when AC Head Pressure is too high
>relay or something for the starter system?
Starter's solenoid is the "relay" which engages starter...unplug it, and see if lights work, or what happens.
>mystery wire, looks like ground...to where?
Looks like a ground...check it with voltmeter....maybe transmission was out of it, and someone cut it off or it rusted/etc...if ground, good chance it bolted to transmission's bolt there.
>so its a -C model eh...
Yes, lockup tranny...been around since at least early 80s

The back wore with no end is a ground
That relay is for the cooling fan
If you are looking at the single wire above the plug on the trans for the TCC then I have no idea. The one with the green wires is for the power steering pressure.
As for the fuse links... Grab them and pull slightly and they should stretch where they are blown.

Grab your multimeter and start testing before and after. Best tool out there to troubleshoot electrical.

ok; in picture of the wiring; "coolant fan wire?" the brown with white stripe or what appears to be brown, single wire, plug, nothing is plugged to it, the piping is for the power steering system, on the other side are wires th plugs for AC control I presume, as there are no other plugs to attach it to. I just received my 1983 Oldsmobile factory service manuals for both chassis and electrical troubleshooting. so i'll be working on the wiring and possibly starter solenoid. the Trans already has another ground going to one of the bolts, there are also 3 or 4 ground cables going to 3 different locations, the relay goes to the same wire loom/bundle as the fusible links, with one of the fusible link wires going to it best i can tell; maybe the ground is for that relay...hm. will be checking with my Equus $12.50 multimeter from wal mart lol.

That single brown(ish) wire is an unknown, its too light for a fan wire though. I can take a look under the hood of my '84 in the morning if you like as it should be neary identical.

alrighy thanks!
OK
EDIT: green/blue wire to plumbing is Idle Pressure Switch; relay with fusible, ground, and green wire; for cooling fan, green wire go to engine block, is Coolant fan switch; the brownish wire IS for the coolant fan connector; I just got all the wiring harness things pretty much solved except the underhood light's wire (still trying to find where it supposed to hook into) by the way, the hotwired fan system is spliced into the Ignition Coil control, by way of Coil wire above the tach connector for the ecm

I was just going to add, I was out looking at the 6k and the cut black one is the fan power wire from the relay. The underhood light wire should be near the wiper motor. Mine didn't have the nowhere brownish wire.

my fusable link is blown too i know one of the links (red) is to the heater box cus thats the one that blew on me and its a pain to get to

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU.
replaced starter solenoid with good unit from a $20 starter assembly out of a 96 Grand Prix 3.1 (twenty bucks aint bad)
still nothing.
wires all say getting power; including purple wire to ignition module. ignition module on back of cylinder head facing firewall is also getting power. ignition coil wire going to the distributor says getting power as well.
symptom; engine does not crank. I smell fuel sprayed into the TBI, confirm pump is running and spraying into the TBI system;
alternator tested good as well.
what could be the problem? I will be calling triple-A to tow it to the family mechanic so he and I can figure out just what the F is wrong with the damn 2.5 :(

Do you have 12v at the Purple wire on the starter when you try to start?
Have you fixed the Ground?
CamoDeafie

yes; and the black wire is the power wire for the old coolant fan; not ground.

symptom; engine does not crank(
So Simple:
1. Install a manual transmission, and roll it down a hill, and "pop" the clutch...
2. Take a hot wire, and touch stater solenoid's wire.
PS: Make sure battery is working, and hot cable is hooked to starter's post...and battery is grounded to engine/frame

1) I aint paying $1500 for a manual transmission job;
2) did that, starter solenoid will click and the motor will run, but only off the engine; means something is preventing the crank from rotating....
battery is good and grounded;
so am going to call AAA and have them tow the car to the mechanic when he's available; then we'll see what did i kill lol.

If everything seems to be working it might be an ecu problem.

Starter runs off the car, not on the engine... That can also mean bad bushings in the starter or a starter thats almost dead. Can you turn the engine by the crank pulley?

I'll try; right now i'm 20 miles from the car >.> but i'll check it tomorrow morning and see if it cranks by hand. would i need to use say, a huge socket to fit onto the pulley thing? or is it possible to crank it by sticking something into the pulley holes and trying to crank it by hand?

After 2 & 1/2 years, my battery shot craps...had a 72 month waranty...starter would click, but no go...battery voltage was good, but when you turned on lights, you could see it had shot craps.

You will probably be best to use a socket but I can't remember what size. Only thing I can think of is the starter if it turns over by hand and everything is putting power to where is should.

using a bigassed adjustable wrench, the engine will crank over; and called triple-A to send a flatbed to tow the car to the mechanic's. will hear from him in the next 2 days and see what happens.

update.....the car is fixed! the problem was that both, yes BOTH starter motors had stripped gears.....the original and the 96 bonne's had stripped gear teeth ,which would have resulted in same symptoms had i put the 96 starter motor in....so mechanic got a reman unit at discount and replaced, it now runs good; so this 96 starter that i still have; is it scrap or could someone rebuild it somehow?

Generalization - Check out cost of rebuilt at various automotive stores, and generally today, its much cheaper to buy a rebuilt, than rebuild it yourself.
I use to rebuild my starters/alternators years ago, but the cost of individual parts is way too high today, unless you can get them at 'wholesale' prices.
I found a new-rebuilt that has a crack facing on it...yes, I will rebuild (use parts) on another starter, if it goes bad.

I see; so its basically scrap? oh well.

That is the problem with getting parts from a junkyard. You never know why the car was junked an sometimes you find out that it was junked becasue of the part you need off of it.

when the other one fails you should be able to replace the drive gear. this is rather easy.

That is the problem with getting parts from a junkyard..
Fuses, body parts, are all good, but engine parts and transmissions come under "wait and see" department.
Very seldom are engines and transmissions are in prime shape...but sometimes, there might be a rebuilt tranny out there, and other engine parts.
