View Full Version : Tensioner Pulley Help

The tensioner pulley on my 1988 Ciera 3.8L seems to have self destructed tonight. I don't have a garage and it's pretty cold so I wasn't able to do a great inspection, but the belt slipped off the pulley, and pulley itself is loose and I'm pretty sure I saw a bearing or two in the debris from where the belt was rubbing it. I've replaced an entire assembly before on my old Iron Duke, but how likely is it that in this case it's simply just the pulley that's bad?
And if so, what is the actual fix? Do you simply loosen the pulley bolt, install the new pulley and tighten her up?
Thanks,
Dan

Sounds like the pulley is just worn out, which led to the belt coming loose.
It's a very easy fix. Just remove the bolt holding the pulley, replace, put back on belt, and that's it.
The only difficult part is the bolt holding the pulley is likely tight as hell. I had to use a pipe (covering the wrench) to give additional leverage.
The pulley is also a very cheap piece.

By any chance is this a reverse threaded bolt?

Last I checked it was.

Really? From what I can remember, it was a standard bolt, lefty loosey - righty tighty.
its left to relieve tension on the belt right? continue in this manner until the bolt comes out.

Nope. Reverse thread. Left to relieve tension on the belt and tighten the bolt. Easy job. Cheap part. Wish they were all this easy.......
thanks for the help

Yeah, love working on the car...or trying to. The amount of room to work in these cars makes it somewhat enjoyable.
I was looking at a honda accord's engine bay, boy oh boy; I was frustrated by just looking at it. Everything is so neatly jam packed.
