question; no start condition, has fuel, has good battery; here is the symptoms; has compression, have not been able to get distributor to rotate to show spark but a test of the ignition coil says it is getting correct amount of voltage of over 12.8 volts;
belt on Alternator (it is a V belt system) is not moving smoothly,and my brother heard a LOUD clicking sound coming from the belt area; might it be the timing gears crumbling away? it is around 71-72K miles on the engine....if its the timing gears crumbling, would it also prevent distributor from rotating as its driven by the camshaft? anything else? alternator?
I've looked on Ebay seems if I want a correct era engine, $450-650 ...for a reman 2.5L engine for 82-83; whereas for a VIN L L27 1992-1995 3800 , I could find them from 150-550 for used low mile engines.....that is, if Maxine's engine needs to come out to make it easier to change timing gears; as I've read that yo needed to bath the gear in hot oil and install it onto the camshaft outside the car? if the engine needs coming out, I'd rather a thorough rebuild and checking for ANY other potential problems, OR just replace whole engine with a reman unit painted up to look brand new and transfer small parts to it...I don't know if its got sludge in there, the oil had been changed exactly once in the 10 months I've owned her; and by Wal Mart...oil tube shows a lower level and quite dark colored thick oil, but when she WAS running, she did not smoke anything, though she was not quite running smoothly when I moved the car out of the garage to the street...and then after a while, wont start....I know its not the damn starter, it tested good!

Seems like maybe timing related. UGH sorry

Timing gears if the disty is not rotating. Take off the cap and crank it. I belive its more age related wear than miles somtimes with plastic. I would definatly fix it for sure. Wierd your getting coil spark, it wouldnt get any if the distributor wasnt turning. Cap and rotor could just be corroded up and not giving enough oomph to get healthy spark to start

ok took the car to mechanic. here is what we found;
black spark plug ends; smoking oil, compression tested OK (100-150psi with #2 and 4 at 100 an #1 being 140, #4 at 150)ok; means distributor should rotate; as cam IS rotating; charged up battery, spark tested good now...he believes i may have flooded the chambers with excess gas and not enough spark the first time around as she started up fine after cranking without spark to get it unflooded and using spray start with cleaned plugs

hmm bad coolant temp sensor causing a rich condition maybe

we also fixed the coolant temp by finally hooking up the fan to the correct wire, there was a black thick wire that led to the relay that was cut before...it is now all fixed...no jury rigged crap hotwired to the ignition pink wire
