Hi, I have a 1987 Cutlass Ciera
My 3 speed is currently on its way out and it's proving difficult to find a simple 3 speed auto with lower mileage (worth putting in).
The engine has about 180,000 miles but is running strong.
I have a few questions: I *may* be able to find a 4t60 at a junk yard, but most of them are 4t60e's. (3 speeds and 4t60's are mostly 170+k miles and I don't think it's worth my time for a swap.)
This has brought up a few options.
A 3.4 swap: Engine and Transmission - This may be an option, but will all the motor mounts fit (I can get certain ones fabricated) I can also take the whole wiring harness for the engine. The question for this would be whether or not the axles will work with the new transmission, and what kind of splicing will I have to do for the internal harnes.
A 3.8 swap: Same issue, but axle issue again and also wiring issue.
Unless I can find a good 3t40 chances are I'm doing a whole swap.
The final question is whether I find a 4t60: Will everything work fine, considering it isn't an electronic shift? Also, the same axle question applies.
I like the car, and I have found a junk yard that permits just about any combination of engines / transmissions to swap at a decent price (200 - 300$ range for both)
I'm trying to find this information out to weigh my choices and make a good decision. -- I'm not diving head first into this without some sort of reference point. (I've been researching this, and some are straight engine swaps while keeping the old tranny, or other variations of the same concept with keeping the old harness. I'm not going to be completely hung up on keeping the old harness, although it would be nice.)
Thanks!
Note: sorry for not writing this clearly -- I'm in class during a 5 minute break, so I figured I'd write this before I forget.
