Hi guys,

I need to put a new engine in my cent the old turbo 2.8 is slowly dieing and needs a replacement. I was thinking of and 80's 3.8 and then later doing a S/C top end swap. Now here are the questions:
Would the engine harness be the same?
Would the 3.8 bolt up to the subframe?
Would the 3.8 computer plug into the harness?
What year 3.8 is the best to swap?

Thanks for all the help!!

this is for all you 4 speed guys out there. i heard the other day the the FWD muncie 4spd don't handle solid (unsprung) clutches well. i ask becuase im thinking about putting a unsprung race clutch in my Buick to avoid any more clutch chater issues that my a show up when turbo it. the other options is i found a beefy 6 spring race clutch. but i have no idea what it will do when i get with in a 100 f-lbs of its torque rating.

any info on reliability would be nice or though would be nice. i would like to a avoid a solid race clutch though

clutchs im thinking about are

spec clutches SC773, SC773+ or the solid SC774

Ok so I was talking to Luke this morning about my car, and he brought up a good question I thought I'd relay to you guys...

As most of you know we did the 3400 top swap on my Ciera, it was 3100 stock. The big question is, was the cam in the 3400 Grand Am (I think Andy sad it was out of an 01) different from my stock 3100 cam in enough of a way where it would hinder performance? It's definately got more pep since we put the bigger exhaust on, but I just have a feeling that something is holding it back from its full potential. If it's the exhaust at the back of the engine then it'll sit as-is until we have the time and money to figure out how to improve that, same goes with a cam obviously if that's the case. Just wondering if anyone has any input on that.

Tomorrow we start on replacing the steering rack (we got the sport rack, thanks Prospeeder for the PN) CV shaft, lower ball joints, and depending on their condition possibly the outer tie rods... an explosion of fun.

As always thanks in advance

1.what would you choose?
2.what would fit?
3.would i have to change transmissions, fabricate motor mounts, etc....
4.what else is involved that i missed?

lets have a brainstorm here :)

engine info:

*LN3 suprcharged - 165 hp (123 kW) and 220 lb·ft (298 N·m).

*series 1 L67 supercharged - HP was rated at 205 for 1991-1993 engines (models vary), and 225 for 1994-1995 engines. The additional horsepower and strength was gained by using six bolt main bearing caps, a roller camshaft, semi forged bottom end, larger throttle body, roller rockers and epoxy coated supercharger rotors, improving efficiency. The 1994-1995 utilized a 2.85-inch (72.4 mm) pulley versus the 2.55-inch (64.8 mm) pulley used on the 91-93 supercharger.

*series 2 L67 supercharged - 240 hp (180 kW) and 280 lb·ft (380 N·m) of torque

Transmission Q: TH125 vs TH440, 3-speed vs. 4-speed overdrive?

The 3300 engine was offered with either a TH125 3-speed automatic with lockup or for a $200 option cost, the TH440 4-speed overdrive automatic with lockup. If I have a 3300/TH125, what must be changed other than the actual transmission itself, to put a TH440 in the TH125's place?

I plan to do this same idea with my Torino. The FMX 3-speed automatic and AOD 4-speed automatic are within an inch of the same length. The mount if flipped over will bolt right up. I will have to change the bellhousing, but that's a $50 weld job and a $325 JW Ultra Bell. No problem. The most annoying part is having to take the driveshaft in to a shop for a yoke change, 1 inch shortening, and rebalance. But I'm willing to do it to take my 14mpg Torino up to 18mpg or so. My 2000rpm at 55mph will become 2000rpm at 72mph. Awesome.

So with this Ciera I'll have this week, I was thinking, I looked up what 3300 engines, TH125 transmissions, and TH440 transmissions go for at local junkyards. Gotta love car-part.com. I can get a 122K engine for $250 or an 83K engine for $300. More expensive engines aren't any better for the money than those two. So if the motor blows, I can replace it whole cheaper than rebuilding the one in it even if I do the work and have a dirt cheap machine shop nearby (which I do in Ennis). I can get a V6-based TH125 for as little as $75 WITH a 6 month warranty. Most of them seem to go for $75-$200. The TH440 is about the same, with the cheapest 30-day warrantied one running $125, but I would probably spring for the 6-month warrantied transmission with 42K on the '92 Ciera it was pulled from for $300 instead.

That got me thinking. Since the bits are so cheap, what else would have to be changed to swap from a TH125 to a TH440?

Drive axles same or different?
How about the transmission mounts?
Shift cable?
Speedometer cable?
Sensors and wiring?
Flexplate?
Torque converter?
Cooler lines?
