GM started using them on most V6 and V8 applications starting around '96 or so. Not sure if they were actually gear reduction, but they are more compact an powerful. Does your 4.3 share a starter with any other motor?

The starter (if its like any of the GM V6 starters) should all interchange no problem, 3100, 3400, 3800 even. now on a 4.3 im not sure if GM used the same starter... According to my Napa system, The 4.3 Diesel uses a different starter from all other engines offered by GM, it is not used by a single other vehicle but the a body diesel, wich is says they made The 6000, Century, Cutlass, and Celebrity in deisel, is that true?

the 4.3 runs a gear reduction starter (delco version) though 83 and in 84 a mitbize gear reduction starter. both have the same botl patterns as the 2.5 direct drive starter i have. ther just gear reductions. so what year did the 3000 seiere motor start coming with gear reduction starters.

If you have it available to you, check, and cross ref, for the Caddi Deville, 82-86?, 4.3 Diesel, and see if anything else used it.

anything rwd will have a diffrint bolting pattern. as the 4.3 came in the to vins vin T (like mine) used in the transvese setup (came iwth alumun heads to shave weight) and some other vin for the rwd setups the rwd vin (i cant quite remeber) used the stanrd gm (sbc bbc) bell housing but may have still had the BOP bell house as it is a olds motor and came iwth cast iron heads. i geuss you will find that they used the standerd imperal starter bolting set up (off set bolts) on the 4.3 rwd

The deville (and any other caddy) only had a 5.7 deisel, wich is definatly different, 85 was first year for 4.3 i see now. This starter only crosses to the following. Deville and Fleetwood, 1985 only, and it says all the abody cars also 84-85. Interesting, but if you look up and 82 Diesle centruy it is definatly a different starter, i have pics i see, and the 82-83 starters are WAY different than the 84+ deisel starters.

This may be a tricky one to answer...

some of the L27 engines such as the 91+ Park Avenue used the gear reduction starter... The same goes for all 3800 Supercharged engines, all of these had the gear reduced.. For the 3800 the gear reduced wasn't really wide spread untill 98-99 iirc.. Even my 95 used the direct drive... But on both the Transport and 91 Bonneville, when the starters went I replaced them with gear reduced from the newer 3800's..

Direct drive on the top, gear reduced on the bottom..

Ignore the fact that I had the dash off for windshield replacement... Starter is way better at starting the car than the old one was... But the old one was done...lol

Glad to be of some help...

But will this starter work on the 4.3 Block with no issues?

I installed a newer model starter this weekend on the Ciera (2.2), great swap. But definitely go used if you can (I got mine off of Ebay), rebuilts are pretty expensive, usually over $150.

I referenced an early 2000s S-10 truck with a 2.2L. I compared the picture of that starter with a pic of the stock one on RockAuto.com, then went hunting for one on Ebay after I saw the price of the rebuilt

So is the general consensus that the starters on all 60v6 motors are interchangeable?
