Ten years of production = 1.529.917 cars.

How many did you say you saw?

After all it was a JUNK yard you were at. Would you expect every other car there to be in pristine condition?

JUNK yards hold... surprise: JUNK... or that's the general idea.

I bet all the Escorts were pristine   :kekeke:

And by this logic, the ever reliable and bombproof old 1970's Datsun and Toyota pickups are no good either because the dashes tend to crack and the beds rust. Or 1970's Chevy pickups for that matter with their typical cracked dashes and rusty fenders.

But seriously, the 1982-1992 Camaro is actually GOOD, in fact GREAT! Right up there with the 5.0 Fox Body Mustang in terms of bang for the buck.

You call a cracked dash, sagging headliner, and material coming unglued JUNK? Wow you are a bright one. Maybe all those were owned by DOPES that tried to "mod" those things or were careless with their cars. I bet not one of those had a 350 in it. I would even bet that most of them were the V6 versions which most people could care less about.

Clearly ignorant to the fun that is an F-body......why pipe in with a thread like this anyhow??? Using JY cars as a barometer for reliablilty/quality is a little screwed up....No, correct that, a LOT screwed up....

ah but it is. I've been to 4 junkyards in illinois. Several of them are over 2 acres. But, when you look around you see a couple fords, a couple honda's and toyota's. But what has dominated every junkyard.... GM! Why? blown motor here, blown transmission there. Almost every ford I've seen was junked due to a wreck. Yet I've seen a mint cutlass calis junked just because the motor blew up on them. We got the dodge intrepid's with the cursed motor that sludges up and expensive to replace. We got the dodge cars with the 2.5 that had warped heads. the 3rd gen f-bodys that the strut mounts routed out. what did i see parked next to a rotted out chevy? a mint ford tempo over 20 years old that looked like the day it rolled off the showroom floor, and it was fords base model!

That's because a) people don't know how to take care of their cars, especially not in IL (I know, I live here) and b) in reference to your comment about camaros, they were meant to have the shit beat out of them. I went to a yard a few months ago and saw mostly what? Mustangs.... because suprise suprise (most) people buy sport cars to beat them.

OK, so does that mean because I work in a Toyota parts dept, every Toyota is junk because all I see are the ones with problems??? Faulty logic.....

tech check the crusher. junk yards have limmited space. and they dont keep everything that isnt worth something (vita parts it what they sell) for long

so the fact that they have loads of gm cars means one thing they selling parts for them more then ford or others. this can be looked at as more poeple are driveing GM make cars the other brands. which could be said that gm's qaulity is better

The Jys i go to say the GM cars rake in the most money over time so they keep them around the longest. they said they just crush mazdas, toyotas, hondas, fords..... ect because nothing good comes on any of them.

BTW I wanna go to your junkyard so bad!!

Our local yards stock mostly GM because most cars sold in IA in the 80's & 90's are GM. Remember, the NEWEST 3rd Gen Camaro around these states has spent 17 years sputtering around this road-salt wasteland.

Well here's the real reason there are so many camaros/firebirds in jy's, dumb ass, young men think they are cool and fast and furious. I knew 3 guys in high school that wrecked their camaros/trans ams/stangs

Honestly, you make me laugh and feel sorry for you by how you defend an Escort and bash camaros, a very proven vehicle.

Pontiac6ksteawd

Tech, again with the clueless banter...

The reason you dont see any escorts in the yard, well, they have already been crushed..

The reason you dont see any Tempos in the yard, OR on the road, they have been dead LONG time ago, and made into Toyotas...

Lastly, the reason you see many more GM's in the yard, well lets see, they have been the number one car and truck producer since the 1970's, more people own them because in general, they were more afordable, more reliable, and easier to work.

Tech, for the last time, learn your facts befor you spout off. Just because YOU dont know how to own a GM, doesnt mean they are a bad vehicle.

Maybe he'll become a future president of the US? I mean... there was Bush... who was also detached from logic and reality... people voted him in for 2 terms (assuming there was no fraud present)... to "laugh" at his statements and doings. Fizzle has not been here for 8 years... so clearly there is still some slack left for him.

ok, I will give credit to Gm for engine quailty. They had a couple of bullet proofs engines, 3800 and Iron Duke. But when I had the whole interior apart on the ciera and then my escort, (for reparing rips, cracks and such) the escort was built alot better.

For Example, the ciera had a carpet and cardboard rear deck. The escort was plastic, Ive seen alot of rear decks on a-bodys warped due to frost on the rear windshield.

Most of the materials on the armrests on ciera's at the Junkyard were comming loose, Gm did not use a good adhesive for them. EVERY dash on ciera's I've seen have had a large warpped area over the glove box area, due to defective vaccum molding and adhesive used for the dash.

Also the dashes came loose on ciera's driven over alot of bumpy area's due to a poor design of attachemnt points on the dash.

The headliner came loose on the rear of alot of ciera's, instead of Gm using button fastners to hold it up like ford, they used velcro tape, with adhesive not strong to hold the weight of the headiner.

I was going to buy a ciera after I sold mine, the rear axle mount was rotted out, and the car wasnt really rusted at all.

I had owned a 89 Camaro when I was 12. I thought it was a steal for $250

The dash had numerous cracks in it from using a cheaper material not having UV inhibitors in it.

The floor was completely rotted out from the firewall to the rear seat. Gm did not use a good corrosion resistant metal for the floor pans.

The strut tower was rotted out completly on the front right side. Gm didnt use a metal that had the proper fatigue rating, the metal stretched and rotted out, several people told me they had it happen to thier camaro.

The carpeting on the speaker panels on the rear was loose, again due to bad adhesive.

The headliner was sagging see above.

all this and it only had 126,000 on it.

So I dont know why you accuse me of this mindless chatter, I have my data.

I agree with you Fizzle. There is a lot that could have been done better in material choices for dash and doors etc. But that's not the only thing that matters. Fords have a body that rusts... that could have been prevented by using carbon fiber bodies.

See? nothing is perfect. Not FORD, not GM, not ANYTHING. I will have to deal with the dash in my Bluesmobile, because it's absolutely hideous... warped, loose, faded, broken... you name it, it's got it.

In car production, we may be looking at 100.000 units per year. If the material choice costs 10 dollars more per car than the cheap materials (but it will look and work well for the first 5 years of the car's life), the producer will be losing a million dollars.

The producer needs to make profit for the stock holders, and that often results in picking cheaper solutions than the end client would like... but then again, the end buyer wants an affordable car.... so the cheapness of both producer and end buyer goes hand in hand.

It is still possible to buy hand made cars, where the buyer chooses design, materials parts etc. But those do NOT come cheap.

It's simply about money.

Not to mention he is from Illinious (sp), you know, that state where obama is from, the current and last govener are going to jail for a LONG time, and that state produces more rusty cars than most of the other states out there.

Tech, did you ever stop to think that it wasnt the metal that fatiqued, or whatever, it was the fact that ILL uses some of the most Corosive ice prevention stuff out there. My 2006 International has rust on it, because of ILL.
