Does anyone know the root cause for our highly inaccurate fuel gauges? Is it old wiring that's corroding away, defective factory sending units, or are the gauges themselves just screwed?

So it's indeed the sending unit? Replacing the unit should correct this then right?

no no no! The sending unit sends gas not the fuel level. Try taking the su out of the take and see how rusty it is. Also make sure the su is well grounded.

Err, you said it's not the sending unit, then you said to check it?

not the pumping part of the sending unit the level part.

Um, the fuel pump is the part that pumps the fuel.

Anywho, of all the Celebs I've had (a bunch), the gauges have all read somewhat accurate except for one. They were accurate as long as you weren't going through a corner, braking, or accelerating:lol: The other one just always reads about 1/8 to 1/4 more than it actually has in the tank.
It's just simply in the design of the system.

x2 86. Mine reads accurate as long as the car is on a straightaway, and no side to side forward to backward movement is occuring.

This is probably because there are no baffles in the tank to slow the movement. Other cars i've driven (not GMs) will show very very slight changes, but not noticable unless your looking.

Poor design is the root cause.

91+ cieras have baffles in it I believe.

Well, if they do, they still suck as bad as the earlier models.

Agreed. I remember my '89 having baffles because it was near impossible to pour the gas out when I changed the pump.

My 85 Ciera had baffles in its factory tank. The cheapo replacement didn't.
