That's a front hub. What in the hell are the rings and such for? I thought it was a simple swap as far as replacing hubs were concerned...

Yes, that's true. Only replace the ring if the old one is bad. Adds a lot of time to the job.

Hmm, I didn't know you could buy just half of the hub assembly.

That's a complete hub assembly - the seal shown goes in the back side of the steering knuckle. It is not part of the hub. To change the hub is a 20 minute job. To change that seal requires removal of the CV shaft, disturbing the alignment, and about an extra 2 hours.

They include that seal because it is a redundant seal for the hub bearing. If that seal is bad, water can come into the cavity behind the hub bearing. Once the hub bearing seals get weak, it will contaminate the bearing.

From what I've seen, the only way that seal fails is if something wraps around the outer CV joint and tears it up.
