and in regard to removing the axle, could i just unbolt the two strut bolts and move the hub out the way? or do i have to remove the ball joints too

Unbolting the strut like that will require a alignment after the fact. I would just remove the lower ball joint, tie rod end, and slip the axle out. Its the way I have always done it.

I cant tell if those are the right parts for your needs..

like a dummy I accidentally bought the solenoid for the 125c instead of the 4 speed. i think the one i linked from rockauto is right for the 440t4/4t60. I really need to get this job done to make this car finally road worthy again. The 35-45 stall is awful and i unplugged it and the problem went away but i havent driven it out of the yard since i unplugged it cus i dont want to burn up the torque converter.

Seems to me the TCC solenoid kits I bought were universal, but you had to remove a tab to make it work with one or the other. Might have just been the brands I bought. But ultimately they are different.

The 3 speed is easy. Not so easy on the 4 speed. I replaced the solenoids on a 92 Trans Sport 4T60E which should basically be the same as an a-body. Was 16 years ago however. Took me 10 hours. While I was in there I replaced the harness and all the solenoids.

Axle has to come out. Easiest to separate the ball joint from the knuckle at the pinch bolt. Had to undo the stabilizer bar to accomplish this.

Had to support the vehicle and lower the engine cradle with engine/trans enough to get the side pan out.

To accomplish this I had to disconnect the steering column u joint at the rack. Loosen all 4 cradle bolts, and with a jack under the driver side, remove the driver side cradle bolts and lower the cradle until the trans side pan will clear the engine compartment wall.

                  ”Installation is reverse of removal”

May have to align it anyway since the cradle has to come down. But probably easier to undo the ball joint pinch bolt than those 2 huge strut bolts anyway.
