I need to get my lower intake gasket done before the harsh montana winters hit. My time is running out quickly and I'm ordering the gasket set from rockauto Wednesday. I've got the rocker arm rod removal tool to make it so I don't have to take out the entire rocker arm assembly. However I'm thinking while I'm down there should I just do the head gasket too? Either way I've been putting this job off because it's intimidating. I've heard it's not hard but a time consuming job. About how long of a job am I in for here and any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance guys!

You having the 3x00, i am not sure..
On my 3.1, which I think is essentially the same. I had it done in 6 hours.
The head gasket I would not touch unless you believe it is a problem. The reason I say this is because of the Exhaust manifold, Crossover, and possibly downpipe, depending on which side of the engine you are working on.Brian - Carpe Diem

The head gasket is definitely old, but It's not a problem like the lower intake is. You can hear the lower intake suckin in air, which is causing a rough idle and some other pretty standard symptoms. Of course on 128k and 29 year old gaskets im surprised they've held up as well as they have. But I'd rather get it done now than be out my daily and doing it in the snow and -30's.
Yeah I got the l82 in it with a couple of LH0 parts off a Supreme from the JY. Lots of things are the same or very similar but alot of things are different and not compatible without modification beyond being worth it.

If I was going to do anything else preemptively, I would do the timing cover to block gasket. They will weep, then actively leak, coolant through the relief machined in the cover. This is commonly misdiagnosed as coming from the head gasket, particularly on the firewall side of the engine.
Incidentally, if the relief wasn't in the timing cover, it would dump coolant into the engine. Or maybe the gasket would be thick enough to not leak!Last edited by CorvairGeek; 10-22-2023, 02:27 PM.Jerry

Start to finish 3.5 hours and running some plenty of them over the years . Honestly it’s not bad at all I still have the stock headgasket on my 1995 Buick century 3100 . I picked up a quart of royal purple 10w30 and 2 quarts of valvoline synthetic transmission fluid . The transmission fluid is to flush everything and keep the lifter lubriceted . The royal purple is to coat each push rod and pre soak . The rest is actually easy take your time clean and always replace the heater hoses and thermostat. Make sure the set comes with the dummy distributor o ring while u are Al it .

Starting this project after taking the wife to work. Got felpro intake bolts, felpro master kit, push rod remover tool, cardboard box for push rods to be pushed into, 6 hours of work before I take my wife to work, my assistant and outside cat chinser (always ready to help), about 1/2 the willingness needed to do this and last but most importantly approximately T-minus: 20 hours till snow starts dancing its way down. Anything im forgetting?

45 minute mark. Things were going well. Too well...
1.15 mark. Fuel rail is gone only 1 injector gave issue. No problem not my first time on the rail. Im nervous at how well this is going...
Get to the valve covers and find the thing that had to go wrong. ALL my valve cover bolts are 400% seized and they ALL started stripping and rounding.
