Default New Project: 89 Pontiac 6000 STE AWD

Well happily i have acquired Brian's (Pontiac6Ksteawd) 89 6000 STE AWD, and got acquainted with it on the 1000 mile journey back to NC. Along with the car i got a plethora of parts to go with it (Thanks Brian!). With my recovery day today from work i gave the car a good cleaning inside and out, and swapped out the grill for the correct one provided with it. Lots of things to do, including:
-get the driver's side rear air strut rebuilt or replaced so the car can sit level again (compressor is disconnected due to leaking strut)
-figure out the oil pressure gauge issue (suspect sending unit)
-install the correct bumpers and body kit pieces on the car (provided with it in purchase)
-some minor body work, and have the paint cleaned up
-get the A/C working again, and i'm sure there is stuff i'm forgetting

Performance enhancing modifications will be done down the road. I'm looking into a turbo option, perhaps a low pressure option (~5psi) following in turbokinetic's footsteps, perhaps a full blown version similar to the McLaren 3.1. But that is down the road. I'll grab a pic or two to throw up here soon, and will maintain this thread as i get things done (i have 5 cars i'm working on all at the same time so i bounce between projects).

How long did it take to get the brake scrub off? Flat spotted tires?

Glad she made it no problems. She had me a little worried to be honest. As I said, the car has basicly been sitting for almost a year! I hope she serves you as well as she served me, and mainly, my wife!

Brake scrub was gone just outside STL. I think the tires (at least one) may be out of balance cause i had a small vibration the whole way. Nothing bad, and it would go away in a turn, so im pretty sure its a tire and not the driveshaft. I'm glad i had no problems as well, although the Illinois state police weren't too happy i had no plate on the car, but just gave me a warning ticket and let me go. Lucky me. Now i just gotta find the oil pressure sending unit...

If you're planing on a turbo, keep in mind that the weak link in the equation will be the transmission. They're not made to handle a whole lot of power, as Dave can attest. I think he said he went through three three speeds on his T-Type clone before he went to a four speed.

Duke, you are right. I don't know the power limits of a stock 125C, but any talks of a turbo are a way off, just something i'm considering. I'm not looking for all out speed on this car, but do want it to have some more grunt. You still selling those ported heads and intake manifold for a Gen 2 60 degree?

doesn't a fiero have the same transmission,i've been told those won't hold up to any sort of decent upgrades on the 2.8,so i'd assume it's be even worse off with a 3.1

Unfortunately i'm limited to the 125C until i figure out another transmission that would work with AWD.

I am. I had a bite over at 60degreev6, but I don't really go there anymore since I don't own a 60 degree powered car. Send me a PM with your address and I'll get a shipping quote if you're interested.

Kinda figured IL would be the state to give you greif. They do that to everybody thou...

There is a warrenty on the tires, but I am not sure its transferable, or if you have a membership at Sam's Club.

Come to think of it, there are alot of warrentys on that car.. Advanced Auto, Western Auto, Autozone, NAPA, and Parts Plus too..

I talked to a guy at the GMC dealer today, he mentioned that bleeding the entire brake system on that car once a year would be beneficial for its life span.

Good to know. I'm considering losing the TEVES system though, not a big fan of the brake pedal feel. But this is all planning stage right now.

    Mad Hatter,

The other night I was looking over some 4T65 stuff and discovered they made an AWD version of the 4T65 for the U-Vans and other AWD applications (Pontiac Aztek, Buick Rendezvous and others) :

I'd be lying if I said I knew anything about this transmission, but I figure if there was another AWD transmission that would at least _maybe_ wedge in place of the TH125C, it would be the 4T65-AWD...

You'd think the 4T65-AWD transmission could handle a little more torque and horsepower then the TH125 AWD transmission, especially since it was originally in vehicles much heavier then the 6000 AWD. The LWB Chevy Uplander AWD's 3.5L, 200hp/220ft. lbs. of torque V-6 was coupled to the 4T65E-AWD and it weighed 4,600lbs, so I bet a standard 205hp McLauren Turbo 3.1 setup would be no problem for this transmission...

    A 6000 AWD with a 4-speed overdrive transmission and a 205hp turbo-charged 3.1 that looked factory would be a hoot!
