OK you clowns, I haven't posted here in awhile and I see you're trying to figure this out. So here you go. This is the best method to modify your factory Delco radio for use with a iPod or MP3 player. This is the same kit I used to sell on Ebay. And I do still have the VR. Its still just the way it was with the exception of tinted windows and a remote cooling fan switch. And it now has about 35K on it. We have a Jetta Sportwagon TDI now and its much more fun to drive, so the VR pretty much sits waiting for the occasional weekend drive.

A very thorough writeup. If I ever find myself an A-body convertible, this is what I'll be doing.

I have the stereo from my '96 still, I may pop the top panel to see if that ribbon is there for that year as well.

I'm probably going to open it tonight or tomorrow, depending on when I get bored. I may even do this mod for the heck of it, since I enjoy soldering.

My guess is it will be the same. The later radios ditched the orange power button in favor of a twist on volume switch, but everything else including the radio related buttons stayed the same as far as I can tell. I can't imagine that small change requiring a rework of the tuner and amp boards or the ribbon cables.

Well I got ready to open the top and realized I didn't even have to... I could clearly see the ribbon cable through the ventilation holes in the top of the radio. So it is confirmed, at least visually, that the mod will work on a '96.

Mine is model 16196213, according to the label on the side. It was manufactured 03/28/96 in Mexico. It is an all-black model, with no chrome or any other color on the buttons or knobs.

I was just thinking how nice of a garage radio this would be. Of course most people just throw a cheap boombox in the corner, but when I was growing up my best friend's dad had taken an old car radio and built a small wooden enclosure with a 12v supply for it. He had the speakers mounted in boxes at the corners of the garage, and I always thought his setup was really cool.

I am having a real hard time finding shielded 4 conductor security wire...No luck at Home Depot...Any ideas on other sources?

From my understandings, this should also work on CD players. I havent dont this to comfirm. But I have a question. Will the tape deck still work?

If your cassette player still works, it will not be affected in any way.

If I can find the wiring - tried Radio Shack, they weren't too helpful but thank Brian. - I'll see what I can do with my spare Cutlass CD.

Try Lowes for the wire. It doesn't HAVE to be security wire, but the internal shielding will prevent any interference. You can use 18 or 22awg standed wire and wrap the ground wire around the other 4 wires. If you go with 5 individual wires, just make sure you connect them to the correct locations.
