    Default 1985 Wiper Motor Needed

    Hi All,

In need of a (front) wiper motor for my 85 Century. My motor is about shot. Ive been having issues with the wipers either not working altogether or they wont shut off. It appears someone got overzealous replacing the washer pump motor and cracked the housing allowing moisture in. Who knows how long its been broken. Basically the whole thing is one corroded mess. A replacement is quite hard to find. The motor itself is easy to get, however the circuit board and cover are non-existant. I cannot find a pre-88 A body in any of the wrecking yards in my area. I grabbed one from a Caddy Seville, but the motor is totally wrong (basically the washer pump is the only shared part with the A body). My cover has the washer pump built in and the car has delay wipers. If anyone could help me locate one, Id be forever in your debt. Thanks

That's the dreaded pulse board. The motor is likely ok. You'll either need to find another pulse board from a JY donor....or repair your existing board.

Second that! The plastic cover is hard to get, as well as the PCB inside.

I have had good success with cleaning and refurbishing the old ones. Since yours is totally corroded, you may want to get a junkyard one and refurbish it. The solder connections seem to fail, so I would re-touch each point and add a little silver-bearing solder to it to make it less likely to crack again.

On my 84 Olympia, someone has cracked the housing around the screw holes, and tied it back together with "baseball thread" which surprisingly worked pretty well. Until the wash pump needed to be changed.

It looks to have been leaking a loooong time. The grease from the motor half is washed out and what remains there is a sticky rusty mess. Id rather not reinstall a nice PCB on a crappy old motor.

The search has been fun. Been looking almost a year and a half for one. I have yet to see a square back A body in the yards anywhere in a 75+ mile radius. Ive even dug through piles upon piles of wiper motors at older junkyards and still nothing. The closest I came was one from an 86 Seville. Every A body I find is 89 or newer which is far different. Im thinking about trying to adapt one from a later car and install the matching washer tank and pump. The wiring appears to be colored the same. Id just need to grab the pigtail for both the washer pump and the motor itself. I think I need to think a little more outside the box to get this repaired.

There were two wiper motors available in 1985. A 2 wire armature and a 3 wire armature. This is going to be a long post but you can find what fits.

If it's a 2 wire, you can use A through H by doing what it says below.

    2 wire notes:
    |A| thru |H| fit as shown in notes.

Motor end cap has two terminals.

    |A|, |B| & |D| fit by switching cover & pump.

    |E|, |F| & |H| fit by including its jumper harness, and switching cover & pump.

    |G| fits by including its jumper harness.

    If it's a 3 wire, you are restricted to E through H.

    3 wire notes:

Motor end cap has three terminals.

    |E|, |F| & |H| fit by switching cover & pump.

Well it appears to be a 2 wire from what I can tell. Its awfully hard to get to, but I only saw 2 wires leading into the end of the motor.

My cover is held on with zip ties. And fingers crossed. It has not failed me yet. Every now and then it has the return to off and turn back on glitch but otherwise they have been working. Now the washer. That thing u can hold the button all day. And hear the pump run. But nothing ever happens

With the help of 4 cars, I finally got my wipers to turn on AND off as they should. I used a cover from an 86 cutlass 2 door, a board from an 85 cutlass 4 door, the plastic piece that is attached to the cover on a spindle came from an 86 Deville, and the motor itself came from another 85 Century. I managed to piece it all together and get it working again! I sure hope this lasts. It took 4 cars to get this to work, I don't want to ever have to do this again. Thankfully my 85 is garage kept.....
