    That's the way I did it way back when I couldn't afford to buy 4 tires at a time. Although I put the new ones on the rear to get the max life out of the new tires.

    I always thought the new ones went on the rear...if there was a rear blow-out, you had less control than with a front blow-out.

    This is the same with snow tires and chains. People often mistakenly beleive that a fwd car only needs them in the front, but when you do that you end up having a car that tends to spin any time you hit the brakes. Remember understeer is easier to control than oversteer, so you need to be sure to always have good traction in the rear.

    I'm old school, and would be prudent with one set (chains/snow-tires), but with reduced speeds.

    That said, FWD vehicles with a decent tire set on front, do quite well, at slower speeds.

    On RWD Volvo-245, I use skinny tires (VW bug sized) in Winter to get around quite nicely, at slower speeds.

    Wider tires usage came after late 1960s, in ballparks; before then, many OEM vehicles had skinny tires

    This video doesn't distinguish between RWD (the BMW) and FWD, there is a world of difference which tires work best front/back. Also front tires are 75% of braking power.
    And: "Hydroplane" is a Boat/ The proper term is Aquaplane.

    No, your control is front. Most cars cant steer the rear tires.
    On a M/C, you Always have a good front tire. If front blows, you're dead. If rear goes, you have some control. And again; 75% of braking power is to front wheel(s). When my forks leaked oil over my front discs, I tried to slow with rear brake (drum), it only locked and skidded.

    No, your control is front. Most cars cant steer the rear tires.

    the locked and skidding is why you want good tires on the rear. If the rears lock you are likely to spin, if the fronts lock you tend to continue to go straight, which while both seem horrible, it is far easier to recover from you sliding forward than a spin, plus cars are built to run into something in the front a lot better than on the door.

    Best to replace all 4 . I always did.
