    I've never tried to recover a "dead battery."

    What happens here?

    12V
    REPAIR
    16.5V | 1.5A | Any Capacity
    An advanced battery recovery mode for repairing and storing old
    damaged, stratified, or sulfated batteries. When selected, a red
    Press & Hold

    Just using jumper cables might put a surface charge on a dead battery...then use charger

    Not real sure. I think too much too soon too quick will boil the battery. I tried a 5 amp charge on a discharged batter a couple of years ago, got hot and cooked it pretty good....and it was still dead in the end. I'm going to setup a really small current rig and see what happens.

    When using those home-made 12 volt alternators on semi-trucks, tractors, which have up to four batteries, these good batteries will not tax the alternator.

    Yes, a high amperage battery charger can cook a battery, but these may not monitor a battery's voltage, like my home-made 12 volt alternator does.

    Hence, a voltage sensing charger is best to use, but I was suggesting to put a surface charge on a dead battery.

    I ended up getting a lab power supply for ~$80 with voltage and current controls. I slowly stepped up the voltage and kept the current at 400mA until I got to 13.8v. At that voltage I let the current taper off; it got down to about 60 mA when I disconnected it. Took about a week and a half, but the battery readily started the car and was able to maintain surface voltage.

    I am not maintaining the batter with the Noco you recommended using the cigarette lighter adapter. Very handy!

    For that smart charger to work, it has to sense a voltage...jumper cables will be needed, but turn off engine of vehicle providing power...try it for several minutes, then see if smart charger can charge it.

    "Jumpstart the battery to raise the battery voltage" is what Noco says, which is what I said.
