Generally, roller cam shafts have steeper ramps to open and close the valve train faster. Roller lifters can achieve this because the steeper slope on the cam lobe is easily accommodated by the roller. A flat tappet cam has a more gradual slope on the cam lobe because the flat lifter would dig into the steep ramp of the cam lobe. You won't realize much gain (except less friction loss at the camshaft). I still have doubts about compatibility when using a roller lifter with a flat tappet cam. The easy answer is don't do it. Make a proper conversion and check block clearances and lifter bores to make sure it is possible.
