Default 1988 pontiac 6000 shifter cable

The shifter cable broke on the column. It had a plastic sheath to guide it, which broke. I have tried two replacements. The cable can't make the sharp bend to move the cable. It binds up. It looks to be a bad design. I am planning to make a bracket and attach it near the emergency brake release. Has anyone successfully replace one of these?

Is it perhaps not routed properly? I've owned many, never had one break.

As stated after trying 3 new ones, they can't make the angle on the column. There is the ferule attaches to the arm. The cable has a metal wrap to help it move during shifting. The replacements bend on the chrome cable end.
